  Chapter 2 Intro:
Can you have too much equipment?? Are you crazy?? No way!! While ski clothing will keep you warm and dry, good ski equipment will help you ski faster and farther while using less energy. In fact, good ski equipment can lift your skiing ability to a while new level of performance. The application of space-age materials and construction technology provide skiers with a whole new range of ski equipment and clothing that is more effective and fun in backcountry conditions.

Image captions (looking at small icons on the left):
Top left: It must be DiamirTM heaven! No, just the Dix Haute on the Haute Route between Zermatt and Chamonix. Why so many DiamirsTM? Because, it is the largest rental backcountry binding in Europe, attesting to its durability and flexibility. Vivesphoto.

Top right: You don’t have to be and extreme skier to use an ice axe. Spring summit skis often require an early morning approach climb and having an ice axe can add a greater sense of security, and therefore speed. Vivesphoto.

Middle left: Europeans are more acquainted with ice axe and crampon use than their North American counterparts, although that trend may be changing. On the Haute Route. Vivesphoto.

Middle right: Crampons add a whole new dimension of security for spring skiers who are going over steep passes or up steeper slopes on early morning climbs. Notice the yellow tape marks on the right crampon. Vivesphoto.
